Colour-coded cleaning

Colour-coding microfibre cloths and mops by area is standard practice in food service, healthcare and anywhere cross-contamination matters, and it is the cheapest process improvement available to most cleaning operations. The system is simple enough that staff follow it without being supervised.

The convention most widely used is:

ColourArea
RedWashrooms — toilets and urinals
YellowWashrooms — sinks, mirrors and other surfaces
BlueGeneral low-risk areas, offices, glass
GreenKitchens and food preparation areas

The point is that the cloth used on a toilet never reaches a desk, and nothing from a washroom reaches a food surface. It works because it is visual — nobody needs to remember a rule or read a label.

Two things make it stick: enough cloths that staff are never tempted to reuse the wrong colour, and colour-matched buckets and mop heads so the system extends past cloths. Worth setting up when you change supplier, since that is the natural moment to replace the lot.

Getting can liners right

Liners are the most commonly mis-ordered janitorial product. Too thin and they split; too big and you’re paying for plastic that ends up folded over the rim. The full sizing method is in our can liner guide, and the short version is two decisions.

  • Size. For a round bin, flat width is the circumference divided by two, and length is the height plus roughly half the diameter plus three to four inches of overhang. For a square or rectangular bin, flat width is width plus depth. Most buildings have three or four bin sizes and order one liner for all of them.
  • Plastic type. LLDPE stretches and resists punctures, so it suits sharp, heavy or irregular waste. HDPE resists abrasion and slicing but has little give, so it suits paper and light general waste. Using HDPE where LLDPE belongs is the most common cause of split bags, and switching the plastic at the same thickness usually fixes it at no extra cost.

Measure the bin, note what goes in it, and we’ll match the size and thickness.

Setting up a janitorial cart

A cart that is set up properly saves more time than any single product on it, because it removes return trips. A working setup usually carries: the colour-coded cloths for the areas on that round, a bucket and wringer or a flat-mop system with pre-charged mop heads, the two or three chemicals actually needed in labelled bottles, a liner supply matched to the bins on the route, and a waste bag.

Two things to avoid. Carrying every chemical you own, which slows the cart and increases the chance the wrong one gets used. And unlabelled secondary bottles, which is a WHMIS problem as well as a practical one.
